jennifer appel

is a learning specialist and certified teacher with 25 years of experience in special education and working with the ‘gifted and talented.’ Jennifer has taught at The Collegiate School, Marymount, Buckley Country Day School, Stevenson, City & Country, St. Jean Baptiste, Fairfax County Public Schools, St. Dominic's and Holy Child. She has tutored children who attend Spence, Chapin, Dalton, Manhasset Public School, Friends Academy, LaGuardia High School, The Town School and many more. Jennifer believes all children are gifted and it is part of her mission to discover and enhance each student’s unique nature. Praise not punishment. Jennifer does not just tutor, but offers real remediation. She changes your child’s entire approach to learning. She creates conceptual frameworks in the student’s mind and helps them process information in ways that last, makes sense to them and connects to their internal motivation. Having your children succeed in school is very serious business and Jennifer’s techniques transform deep and challenging issues in lasting ways. But most importantly, each student finds a way to enjoy the process and this fosters a healthy relationship with discovery, and even obstacles, and creates lifelong learners!

“Each of our 8th graders is expected to deliver a speech they wrote in their last year at Buckley. Over the past 17 years, I have heard many of them, none as powerful, personal, and genuine as the ones I heard with Jennifer as their inspiration and writing coach.

It is perhpas most telling that the best manner in which I am inclined to conclude this letter is with the words on one of Jennifer’s students. During a meeting with me about her choice of which schools and after I asked her about the type of school she was interested in, she simply replied, “I want to go to a school where teachers teach like Ms. Appel.”

CURRICULUM INTEGRATION IDEAS

“Ms. Appel was the medical student education coordinator in the George Washington University Department of Psychatry and Behavorial Sciences. Ms. Appel’s notable effectiveness on an interpersonal level allows her to work well with both medical students and faculty. Because of the great pressure that they work under, medical students can occasionally be demanding, and organizing their educational experiences can be challenging. Ms. Appel’s cheerful, buoyant personality serves her well in this role, and contributes to the positive experience we are able to provide our students.

Ms.Appel has extensive experience providing training for public speaking. This skill was utilized when the department received a grant to develop a community education program on mood disorders. I had to develop a presentation for lay audiences that would present complex medical information in an understandable, entertaining way. Ms. Appel was able to provide me with invaluable assistance, and helped me increase the emotional impact of the talk. She also coached me on the delivery of the talk, aiding me in improving my speaking skills. Ms. Appel is a pleasure to work with, and has been a valued asset to the Department of Psychiatry.
